Project Explorer with the University of Calgary, Department of Geography

Project Explorer is supported by CSN, the Calgary Public and Separate School Boards, and the University of Calgary. A third or fourth year undergraduate is placed in an adopted school for a semester (usually January to April) to work with the teachers and students as a geography content specialist. Resource materials developed during the project are left in the school. So far projects have been on such varied topics as glaciation, ecology field trips, natural structures and mapping software. Projects are tailor-made for each classroom, linking science curriculum and the expertise of the undergraduate.

Space in this program is limited this year so apply early! The program is open to Public, Separate, Charter and Private schools and the only cost is for supplies, which are usually minimal. Successful schools will be notified as soon as a match is made and meetings will be set up with the undergraduates in early January.
Download the application/information form here. The deadline is in September each year, please check here in 2009 if you are interested in applying.

Many budding scientists get excited about science when they participate in a science fair. To make this a realistic experience, CSN fills requests for volunteer judges who are real scientists. There's also assistance available on how to run a successful science fair in your school.

Yellow school bus Expert help can make the difference between an OK field trip and an outstanding one. Scientist volunteers offer suggestions on the best locations, time to go and what you'll find in and around Calgary.

Listening to a real scientist describe his/her work is invaluable in helping students make informed decisions about their career paths.

Add something that goes beyond the text book to Science class.

Our volunteers enjoy sharing their expertise. Send us your questions and we'll find an expert who knows the answer.

Internationally renowned scientists come to Calgary to share their enthusiasm for science with teachers, students and the public. Details will be posted on CSN's highlights and events page when a notable scientist will be in Calgary.
